Traffic Citations
Receiving a traffic citation may
not seem like a big deal. You can simply fill it out and mail
it with the included envelope along with your fine. You should
know however, that receiving a traffic citation is now becoming
a big deal. Along With the prospect of having an increase to
your insurance premiums, you may now also have to pay surcharges
to the Department of Public Safety. You may want to consider
other options before you simply pay the fine.
Getting a traffic ticket is not
just an inconvenience. A traffic ticket conviction may increase
your insurance premiums for up to three years. In addition to
the increase in insurance premiums, if you are judged to be a
habitual violator you could lose your drivers license.
Warrants
If you have failed to take care
of your traffic citations you are likely to have a warrant
issued for your arrest. If you are stopped by a police
officer and he/she runs your ID, you are likely to be arrested.
It is very important that these citations be handled so that the
warrant is lifted. Also, if there is a warrant and you go
to the municipal court to take care of the tickets, you may be
arrested on the spot. It is often wise for you to retain
an attorney to assist you with citations when they have resulted
in warrants.
Bunger & Bunger will assist you
with your warrants by either making a plea with the court. Once a
plea is made, in most jurisdictions the warrant will be lifted and you
will be given some time (usually 30 days) to pay the fines. In
some cases we will post an attorney bond with the court, and the warrant
will then be lifted.
Bunger & Bunger
At Bunger & Bunger, we have
extensive experience with defending traffic citations. We
can assist you in deciding whether to challenge the citation in
court, or if a deferred adjudication is an option, and possibly
assist in reducing the fines. If you have received a
traffic citation or may have warrants issued, give us a call,
and we will assist you in evaluating your situation.
